rickets. Irregularities in the sutures and fontanelleswere frequent; but Fede and Cacace did not regard these as signs ofincipient rickets, but as evidence of a retarded development. So faras my own experience goes, it agrees with the estimate made byFede and Cacace rather than with that furnished by Schwarz. Fcetal Bone Disease (Type B). As an example of Type B, I take the specimen of bone diseasesent to me by Dr. Samuel Davidson (Fig. 47) in 1893. The foetus Fig. 47. was the result of the seventh pregnancy of a woman, age thirty-two,who had enjoyed good health, but who had been married when onlyfifteen years old. All her pregnancies had gone to the full term, allthe infants had been born alive, and all had been fed at the breast.One child had died at thirteen months from convulsions, and oneat one month from bowel-hives. There was hydramnios; the infantwas dead when born, but must have died during delivery, as foetalmovements were felt at the beginning of the labour. The umbilicalcord was only a foot in length. There was partial placenta prsevia,which caused considerable haemorrhage during labour, and wasprobably the cause of the infants death. The father was a healthyman, but much addicted to the use of alcohol in excess. There wasno family history of bone disease. The foetus, a female, weighed2160 grms., and its length with the lower limbs in the position seenin Fig. 47 was 38 cms.; the distance from finger-tip to finger-tipwith the arms extended was 32 cms. The occipito-frental circum-ference of the head was 33 cms., and the occipito-mental, 37 cms.It was evident at a glance that the infant was abnormal.
