rs. It may be spherical orthe usual oval may be greatly exaggerated.Instead of rounded ends, these may bepointed. The central portion of the headmay show marked rarefaction, a findingwhich has been observed only in the largerbulbous types. Varying degrees of calcifi-cation may be found, which here as else-where in pulmonary structures may betaken as an index of chronicity. Variationsin the tail are less marked but differencein thickness and density are observable. From this analysis we would concludethat the inverted comma is a sign of tuber-culosis ; that it is a sign of a chronic, rarelyan acute process; and that it signifies apast rather than a present infection. In the23 per cent which were found in activecases of tuberculosis, the comma is pos-sibly evidence of a previous infection. Much remains to be answered. Is thecomma evidence of a lymphogenous, anhemic, or an inspiratory origin of tuber-culosis? If the latter, then is it evidence ofa bronchial tuberculosis? Is it the result

Why is itith rare exceptions found only on the rightide? Is the comma when once present(ermanent, or may it be absorbed if notalcified? Why is it not present in all cases;f pulmonary tuberculosis? Is this signjapable of practical application in .v-ra)liagnostics? What is the comma, is a question to bedecided by postmortem and pathological;tudy. While at the Cincinnati meeting of:he western section, following my commu-lication on the comma, Dr. Kennon Dun-lam took several of the members to theI^ity Tuberculosis Hospital where he hadnany lungs, preserved entire in large jars.ie had stereoroentgenograms of themnade after their removal postmortem. He;elected one showing the comma sign and;hen dissected the lung to find the comma,t was read
