Nakyenkanyanjuyi & Nakyekubira (Equations & Inequalities)


The etymological meaning of nakyenkanyampuyi, Luganda for equations or equation is in three little Luganda words “ennamba” (numbers), “okwenkanya” (to make equal), and “empuyi” (sides) which form the phrase “nemba ez’enkanya enjuyi” (numbers that make two sides equal). Using the technique of blending, we get the concept of “nakyenkanyampuyi” which is the Luganda word for equations or equation. The other technical (required) terms under this topic are:

• Nakyekubira Inequality or inequalities

• Musikiza substitution

• Okusikiza to substitute a variable (enkuumakifo) with a number

• Okusikiza namba to substitute a variable with a number • Akenkanyanjuyi the equals symbol (=)

Nakyenkanya njuyi (equations) can be in the forms 5+4 = 9 or ½ + ½ = 1, or x+15 =25 or

x + 5 = 11


Nakyekubira (inequalities)


Mathematics is not concerned with solving (okubaza) nakyenkanyanjuyi (equations) only. It also deals with variables that are not equal.

“Nakyekubira” is the Luganda mathematical concepts for inequalities. It is formed by a blend of two Luganda words “namba (numbers) and “okwekubira” (being lopsided) which makes a phrase “namba za kyekubira” (lopsided numbers). This is written in short form as “nakyekubira”, which is the concept for mathematical inequalities in Luganda.


Example: Alintuma ne Bugeza bombi basajja banene yadde nga tetumanyi buzito bwawe kyokka tumanyi nti alintuma mutono okusinga Bugeza. Mu sessomo ly’ekibalangulo, kino tuyinza okukiraga nga tuwndiika bwe tuti: Bugeza > Alintuma

b > a (Wano "b" etegeeza Bugeza, ">"kategeeza “asinga ku", ne "a” etegeeza Alintuma) Such lopsided mathematical problems are called Nakyekubira (inequalities) because they are concerned with   puzzles (obukunizo) of inequality.  These below are the necessary symbols for expressing nakyenkanyanjuyi (equations) and “nakyekubira” (inequalities):

From now on, a Luganda speaker will also be able to express inequalities that are loaded with lack of clarity expressed in the phrase “oba kyenkana”. This lack of clarity in inequality can be expressed using the symbols below:

Akafumito kasonze ku myaka gya fujjo kubanga giri wansi wa 20. Another example: Olina kuba wa myaka 18 oba okusingawo okunywa omwenge. Laga okwekubira nga okozesa obubonero.

Okwekubira oba kyekubira kiba wakati wa myaka gyo n’emyaka 18 kubanga emyaka gyo girina okuba nga gisingako oba nga gyenkana 18. Kino kiba kiwandiikibwa nga:
